March Client Event: Avoiding Toxic Chemicals in our Daily Lives

Join us for a free seminar on March 15 when Dr. Joe Schnurr of InspireHealth will discuss environmental toxins and the best way to choose products that are toxin free, safe for your family, and environmentally friendly.

Learn how to protect yourself from toxic chemicals

Bag of cosmetics

The average person uses 9 to 15 different personal care products a day. Many are thought to contain carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other chemicals that may pose health risks.  When you consider that up to 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream, the products we use at home can have a major impact on our health.

How do these toxins affect our health and what is their role in the development of disease? Which chemicals are the most important to avoid? What can we do to decrease our exposure to toxins in our everyday lives and protect ourselves from potential health effects down the road? Dr. Schnurr will answer these questions and more at the seminar. When you know what’s in the products you bring into your home and how those chemicals may affect your health and the environment, you can make informed health decisions.

Safe alternatives to household products

Next, Nicole Brown will demonstrate some simple cleaning and personal care recipes you can use to make healthy substitutes for conventional products. Nicole, a member of InspireHealth’s fabulous front desk team, will discuss safer alternatives and practices that will help you protect your family from everyday exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

There will also be recipes to share and samples to take home.

This is going to be a fun and interactive afternoon and we are excited about this incredible opportunity to learn from a expert in the field of disease and cancer prevention. This event is free to our clients and their friends and family. Space is limited to 25 participants so book your spot now!

Additional resources for learning more about household toxins:

Story of Cosmetics – this short film explains how toxic chemicals appear in our everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo and reveals the implications for consumer and worker health and the environment. It also outlines ways we can move the industry away from hazardous chemicals and towards safer alternatives.

Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database – This site is one of our favourite resources at OAC. Packed with important health information about the cosmetics you and your family use every day, you can search for product and ingredient safety ratings on shampoos, lotions, deodorants, toothpastes, makeup, nail polish and more.

EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning – Like the Cosmetic Safety Database, this is a searchable site of cleaners and household products listing ingredients and safety ratings on kitchen, laundry, bathroom and other household products. An invaluable tool!

Think Dirty app for iPhones – This app offers an easy way to learn about the safety of personal care products while out shopping. Scan the product barcode and the app will give you info on the products, the ingredients, and safer solutions. Not yet available for Androids!
